PORTRAITS - cut-outs

This is a series of works created as part of Kasia Kmita's Portrait Workshop. It's a modern and incredibly original approach to portraiture. Drawing from extensive formal experience in paper cutting, Kmita has developed her own unique way of representing a subject that has been present in art since its inception, namely the portrait. Her approach to the model is an attempt to synthetically capture the most characteristic features of the individual, and the simplicity of the cut lines enables this beautifully. Portraits are created using multiple layers of paper and cardboard, giving a sense of spatial depth. The formal relief allows the viewer's space to merge with the space of the portrayed person.
